The rivers of Ceredigion all rise in the same place — the Cambrian Mountains, the "green desert of Wales" — and fan out to the coast at every point of the compass. The Teifi is the star: at 75 miles it's the longest river wholly within Wales, known as "the Queen of the Welsh rivers" and one of the best sea trout (sewin) rivers in Britain, with sewin fishing best from June to September on warm, overcast nights and salmon to 23lb recorded in recent seasons.
The Teifi's neighbours — the Rheidol, Ystwyth, Aeron and Dyfi — are smaller but no less characterful, each with its own established angling associations and day-ticket access, and between Cenarth and Cardigan the Teifi still carries a genuine living tradition of coracle fishing.
75 miles from the remote Teifi Pools to the sea at Cardigan, passing through Tregaron, Lampeter, Llandysul, Newcastle Emlyn and the falls at Cenarth. Famous for its sewin run from March, with the main school-fish run peaking July–August, plus a respectable spring and autumn salmon run and good grayling.
Sea trout · SalmonRises on Pumlumon, the highest peak in the Cambrian Mountains, with one of the steepest, shortest descents of any Welsh river — tumbling over Devil's Bridge waterfall before reaching the sea at Aberystwyth harbour. Aberystwyth Angling Association controls around 16 miles.
Trout · SalmonAlso rises on Plynlimon — the geographic centre of Wales sits on a hillside above its upper reaches near Cwmystwyth. Llanilar Angling Association holds around 15 miles between Aberystwyth harbour and Pontrhydygroes.
Trout · SewinForms the northern boundary of Ceredigion and is traditionally considered the dividing line between North and South Wales. Famous for its large summer sea trout run, especially late June and early July.
Sea troutFlows from its source at Llyn Eiddwen down to the harbour town of Aberaeron — a smaller river with its own trout, salmon and sewin fishing.
Trout · SewinA group of six glacial lakes at 1,500ft in the Cambrian Mountains, including Llyn Teifi (the river's official source), Llyn Hir, Llyn Gorlan and Llyn Egnant — famous even in medieval times for eel and trout fishing.
General guide only — most river fishing is controlled by local angling associations (Tregaron AA, Llandysul AA, Teifi Trout Association, Aberystwyth AA, Llanilar AA) with day tickets widely available. Always confirm current permits, season dates and rules directly before fishing.
