The River Tyne is England's premier salmon and sea trout river — formed by the confluence of the North Tyne and South Tyne at Warden near Hexham, the system supports an average of around 32,000 migratory fish a year, based on a decade of Environment Agency counts at Riding Mill. It's rarely too low to fish productively, and its reputation is now genuinely rivalling some of the more famous Scottish rivers.
Away from the salmon fishing, the Tyne has an entirely different claim to fame: it's a float angler's paradise for dace, with match nets of 30–40lb not uncommon and individual fish to 14oz — exceptional size for the species. Northumberland adds the Coquet (a dedicated National-importance salmon and sea trout fishery), the Wear, and a genuinely dramatic coastline running up to the Scottish border.
Formed at Warden by the North and South Tyne. Prime salmon months are April/May onwards, with the North Tyne beats at Chollerford, Haughton Castle and Chesters particularly productive. Also famous for exceptional dace fishing, plus chub, roach, perch, pike and gudgeon.
Salmon · DaceRises in the Cheviot Hills and flows 40 miles to the sea at Amble. A fishery of national importance for salmon and sea trout, with sea trout approaching 20lb some seasons. Remote upper stretches around Linbriggs suit anglers happy to go "off piste" for wild trout.
Salmon · Sea troutRuns through Durham, with its own salmon and sea trout run (close season 1 November–31 January) and a reputation for producing big roach in matches.
Salmon · RoachRegarded as one of the best sea trout rivers in Britain and a genuinely productive night-fishing venue, with double-figure fish landed most seasons.
Sea troutA 2,000-acre reservoir offering boat and bank fly fishing, and playing a role in regulating Tyne flows via scheduled releases that freshen the system for migratory fish.
Well known locally for its autumn and winter grayling fishing.
General guide only — much of the best Tyne and Coquet salmon fishing is controlled by the Northumbrian Anglers Federation (founded 1894, one of the oldest in the UK) or private syndicates, though the Tyne Rivers Trust's Angling Passport offers day access to wild-beat brown trout fishing from around £8/day. Always confirm current permits, season dates and rules before fishing.
