North West England

England · Game & coarse fishing

The Ribble is currently acknowledged as one of the best salmon and sea trout rivers in England — genuinely unusual among Yorkshire Dales-adjacent rivers in that it flows west to the Irish Sea rather than east, which is exactly why it carries such a strong migratory fish run despite rising in the Dales alongside rivers that don't. Its main tributary, the Hodder, is rated on a par with some of the most productive wild brown trout and grayling rivers in Britain, and both flow through the Forest of Bowland, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The Lune, further north near Lancaster, adds a third serious game river to the mix — over 13,000 salmon and sea trout are recorded passing through it most years — while the Ribble's lower, tidal reaches turn into a completely different fishery: big barbel, chub, bream and pike for the coarse angler, a world away from the fly water upstream.

Rivers

River Ribble

Rises in the Yorkshire Dales near Settle and flows west through the Forest of Bowland to the Irish Sea at Preston. Salmon and sea trout in the upper and middle reaches (fish over 20lb returned most seasons), turning into a big barbel, chub, bream and pike fishery in its lower, tidal stretches around Preston and Walton-le-Dale.

River Hodder

The Ribble's main tributary, flowing through the heart of the Forest of Bowland. Wild brown trout and grayling fishing rated on a par with the most productive rivers in Britain, plus its own salmon and sea trout runs. Day tickets available via the Ribble Rivers Trust's Angling Passport scheme.

River Lune

Rises on the Howgill Fells, flows through the dramatic Lune Gorge past Sedbergh and Kirkby Lonsdale to Morecambe Bay. Over 13,000 salmon and sea trout recorded passing through most years. Large brown trout too, often exceeding 3lb.

River Wyre

A further Lancashire river holding salmon, sea trout and wild trout, less well known than the Ribble or Lune but part of the same regional reputation for quality game fishing.

Stillwaters

Stocks Reservoir

At the head of the Hodder Valley — the largest fishery in North West England, with boat and bank fly fishing for trout.

General guide only — most river fishing is club-controlled, though the Ribble Rivers Trust's Angling Passport gives affordable day-ticket access to several beats on the Ribble and Hodder from around £5. Always confirm current permits, season dates and rules directly before fishing.
