South Wales punches well above its weight for a compact area — the Usk is regularly rated among the best wild trout rivers in the UK, the Wye (much of which runs through this region before crossing into England) is widely considered the best coarse fishing river in the country, and the Taff runs straight through Cardiff itself, holding Welsh record barbel to 18lb despite being an urban river.
The rivers of the South Wales Valleys — the Taff, Ely and Rhymney among them — are a genuine post-industrial success story: decades of river restoration have turned once-polluted industrial waterways into productive mixed fisheries holding trout, grayling, chub, barbel and pike, often within a short walk of a town centre.
Rises near Sennybridge and flows through Brecon, Crickhowell and Abergavenny to Newport. Nicknamed "the Lady of the Stream" for its clarity — regarded as one of the best wild brown trout rivers in the UK, with salmon too, though coarse fishing is limited.
Wild trout · SalmonWidely rated the best coarse fishing river in the UK — barbel, chub, dace, grayling, pike and perch all present and growing large, alongside salmon. Operates a strict catch-and-release policy throughout.
Barbel · Chub · SalmonRises in the Brecon Beacons as the Taf Fechan and Taf Fawr, meets at Merthyr Tydfil, then runs through Pontypridd into Cardiff Bay. Holds the Welsh record barbel (18lb), plus chub and grayling — an unusually good urban river.
Barbel · Chub · GraylingAn underfished lowland river through the Vale of Glamorgan into Cardiff Bay. Diverse coarse fishing — grayling, chub, roach, pike and some barbel — best around St Fagans.
Coarse · GraylingRuns from the Brecon Beacons through "Waterfall Country" to Swansea Bay. Salmon, sea trout and winter grayling fishing on its lower and middle stretches.
Salmon · Sea troutA smaller post-industrial river in South East Wales — chub, grayling and the occasional barbel in its lower sections, less fished than its bigger neighbours.
Chub · GraylingA 490-acre freshwater lake impounding the Ely and Taff, right in the city. Holds perch, pike, bream, roach, carp, barbel and chub — plus bass and mullet via the locks, and salmon and sea trout passing through to spawn.
Near Newport — formerly home to a UK record pike (46lb 13oz). A serious pike and coarse water in its own right.
In the Brecon Beacons near Merthyr Tydfil — good coarse fishing for bream and specimen pike, with perch, carp and silverfish too.
